In our 14-day survey of Magnesium Balm, 52% of customers reported improved relaxation and sleep on day 1. By day 14 it was 93%. That gap is most of the answer to the question: can magnesium balm help you sleep?
The short answer: Many of our customers say yes, and they say it in their own words. Sleep is the #1 thing people write about in our reviews. I use it at night myself, and my patients tell me the same. It hasn't been tested in a sleep trial yet, so give it two weeks of steady use and judge it on your own nights.

What is different about this balm?
I made my first balm for my own feet after obstacle races. I made a magnesium balm for my clinic patients and for myself first. I wanted to formulate a product unlike others on the market. My goal: the most magnesium chloride possible that still absorbs in completely, with no sting, no grit and no pins-and-needles tingle, in a handful of clean, non-toxic ingredients. Only goodness and nourishment that truly helps. The magic happens when you massage it in completely. Nothing ends up on your sheets.
What do customers say about magnesium balm for sleep?
Sleep comes up more than anything else in our reviews. Here are a few, in their own words.
"This product has helped me to sleep much better through the night." (Tammy S., verified buyer)
"I feel like it does help with my sleep and stress levels." (Keeley L., verified buyer)
"I apply to legs... just before bed. I sleep very well." (Andrea M., verified buyer)
How does magnesium balm help you relax?
Two things work together: the magnesium and the massage.
My name is Dr. Doug Strobel, MD. I'm a board-certified neurologist, and magnesium is a mineral I think about a lot, because nerves and muscles both need it to settle. Magnesium chloride is the form used on skin, and the best pick for topical magnesium. Lab research shows it can get into the skin's outer layer, helped by hair follicles, the tiny openings hairs grow from (Chandrasekaran and colleagues, 2016). It works right where you put it.
The massage matters too. A slow rub on tight calves feels good, and doing it every night becomes a signal that the day is over. For the full science, read Magnesium Lotion for Sleep: Does It Really Work?
Is a magnesium balm better than a pill for sleep?
A balm gives you the magnesium and the massage, with nothing to swallow. The sleep trials so far used pills, with modest results, and no trial has compared a balm to a pill yet.
A balm is different in a few ways people like. There's nothing to swallow, so it's easy on your stomach. You put it right where you feel tight. And the massage is part of the wind-down. Many people use both.
How to use magnesium balm for sleep: pick, rub, repeat
- Pick your spot. Calves, feet, neck or shoulders. Start with a thin layer.
- Rub it in. Cover the spot that bothers you, plus about 5 inches above, below and all the way around it. Massage until it disappears.
- Repeat. Use it whenever it fits your night. Many people keep a stick on the nightstand. Skip broken or irritated skin.
Picture the house finally quiet. You sit on the edge of the bed, two minutes on your calves, and your legs stop buzzing.
Based on a 14-day consumer perception survey; respondents per check-in varied.
